Google willing to share mobile ad revenue with operators

Google has been so busy tweaking service providers of late, it seems, it’s easy to forget they make a good mobile partner as well.

The new Google Adsense for Mobile Search delivers a Google-hosted search box that mobile operators – and content providers too – can brand and place on their mobile portals. Google handles all the heavy lifting while also enabling the box to be co-branded by the mobile operator. For the effort, it shares ad revenue with the carrier, Google said in a blog post.

The service is just now entering beta testing, and Google invited interested mobile operators to get a private meeting for a briefing on the offering at Mobile World Congress. Interested operators can fill out a form to request a meeting.

Google axed Android multitouch at Apple’s request?

Google axed Android multitouch at Apple’s request?

It seems there’s a reason that T-Mobile’s new G1 touch-screen smartphone doesn’t have a multitouch display: Google doesn’t want to upset Apple.

Google – maker of the Android operating system used by the G1 – is cozily in bed with the Cupertino Fruit Company in a number of areas, from iPhone and iPod mapping capabilities to Safari search to the new geotagging Places feature in Apple’s iPhoto ’09.

It’s a partnership that Google apparently wants to keep healthy and happy, according to a report from VentureBeat.

An unnamed source told that venture-capital news service that Apple asked Google to not implement multitouch capability in Android and that Google acquiesced.

What’s more, the same source told VentureBeat that the Android team was “relieved that Google didn’t go against Apple’s wishes,” fearing the same assault that Apple appears to be preparing to mount against Palm due to that company’s multitouch Pre smartphone.

Its main weapon in that assault? The fearsome Patent #7,479,949, which covers many of the touch-screen technologies used in the iPhone and which Apple’s acting CEO, Tim Cook, brandished less than subtly during the company’s recent financials-phone-fest with analysts and reporters.

Google Offers Reason for Pulling iGoogle for iPhone Application

When Google released its iPhone-optimized version of iGoogle, the company had released a fairly useful thing.

Unfortunately, the company pulled the application from the App Store last week with almost no explanatation.

According to Ars Technica, a definite answer for the program’s absence has been determined and a workaround may have been discovered for accessing the iPhone-optimized site.

Over in the Google Talk discussion forums, a thread began where users began to express their displeasure at the application’s absence.

In response, a senior engineer for Google offered the following explanation:

“We’ve decided to direct iPhone users to the standard mobile iGoogle page. We’ve found that people hit iGoogle from lots of different phones — we want to ensure you’ll all see the same version.”

Dell to launch Android and Windows Mobile phones

New reports indicate that PC Giant Dell will be rolling out not one, but (count ‘em) two new smartphone handsets in the short term – as soon as next month. Now here’s the weird part, Dell is said to be preparing handsets for both the Android and Windows Mobile operating systems. Talk about hedging your bet.

Following rumors going back as far as July 2007, the Wall Street Journal announced this morning that Dell will introduce in February at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona two new mobile phones, set to go head to head with market leaders Apple and Research In Motion.

The MePhone (hopefully, that’s just a code name) will come in all-touchscreen and slide-out keyboard versions, but what’s not clear is which model will run which OS or if they’re interchangeable. The phone is due to ship in September and carrier partners have not been announced.
