Visual Studio gets Linux dose with Mono

The idea of Microsoft releasing Visual Studio for Unix and Linux was once – quite literally – a joke.

Not only was Visual Studio only built for Windows, but Microsoft’s licensing had prevented people using its premier development environment with non-Windows platforms.

Now, there’s a little less to laugh about. Microsoft partner Novell has delivered a plug-in designed to help Visual Studio developers easily build, debug, test, and port applications built using C# in Visual Studio 2005 to Linux, Unix, and OS X. The plug-in has Microsoft’s full blessing.

Mono Tools for Visual Studio, released today, lets developers use their existing knowledge of the IDE’s code and tools to target these non-Windows platforms. An update is already in the works for Visual Studio 2008 with support also planned for Apple’s iPhone.

The plug-in targets Windows developers who want to build .NET applications, build appliances, and cloud images using Mono for Linux, Unix, and OS X. It’s based on Mono, the open-source implementation of .NET led by Miguel de Icaza and bought by Novell several years back.

SE Xperia X1 SDK Out For Developers

Sony Ericsson has unveiled their new Beta SDK for Windows Mobile 6.1 to enable developers to create Xperia Panels and applications for the Xperia X1 phone. Xperia Panels can be Native or Web (HTML) and the new SDK includes an X1 emulator, Microsoft Visual Studio IDE plug-in and templates, documents and sample code for the quick development, testing, debugging and deployment of these panels.

Sony Ericsson Developer World also offers Xperia Panels testing and signing information and a new Windows Mobile moderated discussion forum. Xperia Panels will also have a dedicated category in the upcoming Sony Ericsson Content Awards 2008.

The SDK features a built-in true Xperia X1 phone device emulator allowing you to run, test and debug panels locally on your computer without needing phone hardware. To save time and resources so you can get started quickly, integration with Microsoft Visual Studio means you can use predefined Native and Web (HTML) Panel templates to create basic project containers and a preliminary set of panel items.

Dell unveils new Art Edition Studio laptops

Dell has launched five bold and contemporary Special Art Edition designs for the Studio 15 and Studio 17 laptops, exclusively created by urban artist Mike Ming.

The new unique designs for the Studio 15 and 17 laptops include “Red Swirl,” “Seaweed,” “Sunburst,” “Bunch O Surfers” and “Sea Sky.”

Each piece of artwork is brought to life through Dell’s revolutionary manufacturing technique, enabling every vibrant colour and individual brushstroke to be permanently “tattooed” on the laptop’s cover, said an official.

The Studio laptops combine sleek designs, striking visual colour elements and personalisation options with features such as standard built-in webcam, capacitive touch media control buttons, slot load drives, and optional mercury-free LED displays, backlit keyboards and built-in mobile broadband.

Brooklyn-based artist Mike Ming said, ‘The technology behind creating Dell’s Art House series of laptops allows me to share my visual creations with people who are inspired by art and who want to express their own individually unique sense of style.’

“It’s exciting and fun discovering new artists around the world who can create emotional ties, uniqueness and personalisation with individuals’ personal technology,” said David Clifton, director of Consumer Marketing, Dell Europe.

Sony Ericsson releases Xperia X1 SDK for developers

Sony Ericsson releases Xperia X1 SDK for developers

Sony Ericsson is preparing for a big push with its Xperia X1 smartphone, which is due to be released later this year. And that now includes a drive to get developers creating content for the Windows Mobile handset.

The company has published its SDK for the X1 today, and wants developers to start creating games (but also music, photography, email/IM, social networking and video applications) for the device.

Sony Ericsson is talking up the ‘interactive panels’ which function as the X1′s touchscreen interface, with users able to pick and choose from panels created by developers.

It’s still unclear what exactly this means from a gaming point of view. One approach would be for a publisher to create its own X1 panel acting as a dynamically-updating catalogue of its mobile games.

However, if these panels are full applications, then there’s nothing to stop developers creating dedicated X1 games for the phone. Sony Ericsson is making 3D gaming one of its selling points, after all.

Want to investigate the X1 SDK? You’ll be able to download it here as soon as it’s posted by Sony Ericsson..

It’ll include an X1 emulator, Microsoft Visual Studio templates, developer guidelines, API reference documentation, tutorials and sample code.
