Apple iPhone prospers in Britain but suffers in the eurozone

Apple’s share of the British smartphone market has grown almost 10 per cent this year, bucking the trend in the eurozone, where cash-conscious buyers are opting for cheaper Android devices.

Spurred by the release of the iPhone 4S in October, Apple’s market share in Britain rose from 21.4 per cent at the end of November last year to 30.9 per cent this year, according to industry analysts Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. The iPhone had been losing ground until the new version’s debut.

Android also gained popularity among Britons. Google’s mobile operating system now has a 46.6 per cent share of the smartphone market compared 34.8 per cent last year.

Google and Apple’s gains in Britain came mostly at the expense of RIM, the maker of BlackBerry smartphones, and Symbian, the formerly-dominant mobile operating system abandoned by Nokia in February.

RIM’s share fell from 22.2 per cent to 16.9 per cent, and Symbian collapsed from 17.1 per cent to 3.2 per cent.

It leaves Britain’s fiercely-competitive smartphone market looking increasingly like a two horse race between the iPhone and the plethora of Android handsets from Samsung, HTC and others.

Approved: Apple’s ‘Anti-Sexting’ Software Patent

Apple has just been awarded a patent for what people are already calling ‘anti-sexting’ software.

Kids these days and their cell phones — you just never know what they’re talking about with their friends. Fear not, Apple can help you! TechCrunch reports that the Cupertino, California-based company has just been awarded a patent for a “text-based communication control for personal communication device.”

The patent description claims that there is “no way to monitor and control text communications to make them user appropriate,” and goes on to give children sending and receiving messages with objectionable language as an example.

“Users such as children may send or receive messages (intentionally or not) with parentally objectionable language,” it reads.

The software would allow parents to implement parental controls that evaluate whether or not the message in question contains only approved words. If an unauthorized word is detected, it can be omitted from the message, and the application could alert the user or a designated third party to the presence of the unauthorized text. The application may require the user to replace the unauthorized text with words that are allowed, or it may automatically delete the offending words. A third option is that the application would just delete the entire message.

Apple greenlights browserless Firefox app for iPhone

Apple has approved an application submitted by Mozilla that syncs history, bookmarks and open tabs with versions of the open source outfit’s Firefox running on desktop computers.

The Cupertino firm isn’t keen on letting other browsers run on the Jesus Phone – but the Firefox Home app has, somewhat surprisingly, been given the thumbs up by Apple.

Mozilla submitted its browserless Firefox to Apple’s app store police on 30 June.

Late yesterday it confirmed that the Jobsian troupe had opened their arms to Firefox Home and it can now be downloaded onto the iPhone and iPod Touch.

“Firefox Home uses your browser data, securely synced from Firefox on your desktop to the cloud, to let you search and browse quickly and efficiently,” said Mozilla.

“You can view the sites you want directly in Firefox Home, open them in Mobile Safari or share them with friends via email. Your Firefox data is private and only you have access to it.”

Firefox Home Hits the iPhone

Firefox Home Hits the iPhone

Mozilla on Friday announced that Firefox Home is now available on the iPhone.

First announced in late May, the app was submitted to Apple for vetting earlier this month. No doubt due to Apple’s long-standing policy of blocking any app that “duplicates existing functionality” of proprietary iPhone programs, the app is not a complete mobile version of Firefox. Instead, Home works in conjunction with Apple’s Safari browser, and gives users mobile access to their desktop browsing history, bookmarks, and tabs.

In April, Opera broke download records with Opera Mini for the iPhone. That is also not a mobile browser in the traditional sense of the term. Rather than rendering full pages on the phone, it sends requests to Opera’s servers, which then return most of the pages in image form.

In order to use Firefox Home for the iPhone, users must install Firefox Sync on their desktop. Once Sync is installed and Home is downloaded from the App Store, users enter their Sync account information into Home, and the two apps will begin the syncing process.

Mozilla promises that user data will be “encrypted end-to-end.”
