Written by Rachel Andrew, author of the popular book The CSS Anthology, and Kevin Yank, author of Build Your Own Database Driven Web Site Using PHP & MySQL, this book will excite even the most experienced CSS designer.

Top Three New Features in Adobe Dreamweaver CS4

Top Three New Features in Adobe Dreamweaver CS4

1. Related Files

The Photoshop integration which was begun in Dreamweaver CS3 has been enhanced in CS4 to offer via the use of Adobe’s Smart Objects technology. A Photoshop file can be imported directly into Dreamweaver and will automatically come in as a smart object.

Whenever you open a file which contains linked files, Dreamweaver displays each of the linked files in the Related Files Bar. To access a related file just click on its name. If you make any changes to a related file and asterisk appears next to its name in the Related Files Bar to remind you to save your changes. When you do, the impact of the changes is immediately visible in the main file.

Once the image has been imported, an icon is displayed in the upper left of the image indicating that it is a smart object. Also, in the Property Inspector, the location of the original PSD file is shown in a box marked “Original”.

The fact that the image is a smart object means that if we resize it in Dreamweaver, it will automatically be re-optimised and a new version of the image will be generated with the new dimensions. (In previous versions, resizing an image would mean that the browser was responsible for resizing leading to poor image quality.

Tips and tricks to turn you into a faster, smarter web designer

Ever had a day when you don’t seem to have achieved anything? Ever worried you’re not going to make your deadlines? Does that project you’re working on seem like it will never end?

We all want to become faster and more efficient – but it often seems like there’s no time to make improvements to the way we work. We can laugh at the self-defeating nature of this circular logic, but that doesn’t get us any closer to a practical solution.

Yet working smarter doesn’t have to mean taking a month off to design a totally new system. In fact, it’s often the most simple changes that are the most effective.

What follows are some straightforward, easy to implement ways to maximise effectiveness and efficiency in all areas of your work, from initial concepts through to design and programming, and also in terms of work environments and project management. Get it right and your work could be in a future list of 20 websites that changed the world.

As you’ll see, the best in the industry aren’t only those who output visually stunning or massively useful and usable projects – they’re also the ones who work most productively.

Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 release date

Adobe has announced a September 23, 2008 web broadcast to officially announce the release date of Creative Suite 4. You can sign up for the special webcast from the Dreamweaver page at Adobe.com.

We probably won’t be able to actually purchase Dreamweaver CS4 at that time, but at least we’ll be able to mark our calendars for the day when we can. If you haven’t tried Dreamweaver CS4, you can download a beta version over at Adobe Labs. If you have a valid CS3 serial number, you’ll be able to use the beta until CS4 is actually released. Otherwise the beta is valid for two days.

Sandown still needs webmaster for town site

Sandown still needs webmaster for town site

SANDOWN — No one has volunteered to serve as the town’s webmaster in the five months since selectmen asked for help.

Selectmen sought a volunteer after they accepted the resignations of the active members of the town’s Communications and Technology Committee, which included the webmaster.

The Communications and Technology Committee is still on the books but has no active members, according to administrative assistant Lynne Blaisdell. No one has volunteered to be on that committee, she said.

Blaisdell recently asked selectmen if the Web site could be shut down temporarily. Town office hours changed this week and the times on the Web site are now incorrect, she said.

But selectmen said it couldn’t be done because no one knows how to use Adobe Dreamweaver, the Web program the town uses.

Selectman Brian Chevalier said he asked a new employee if she was qualified — and interested — in being webmaster. Her answer, he said, was a cautious “maybe.” Chevalier said she told him she would have to see whether she could handle Dreamweaver.

Selectman Ted Winglass said he had tried to access the software on his laptop, but the identification number and password were rejected. Chairman Roger Barczak said the town purchased the software, so surely the ID and password should be available to the town.

Winglass and Selectman Nelson Rheaume plan to interview the new employee to see whether she would be a good fit as webmaster.

Rheaume, who declined to name the individual, said later he hopes to have the interview done soon. If she can handle the job, he said, she could be on board within a couple of weeks.

“I don’t think we can ask this individual to come to Sandown and do this voluntarily. And, I believe the town’s interests are better served if she is paid,” he said. “We’re only talking about finishing the year, or about 17 weeks for three or four hours a week at a cost of less than $1,000. I am sure we can find funds to do that.”
