Nokia released a new software for its two newest flagship Windows Phones, the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, that fixes several bugs.

Most importantly, the software update fixes a bug with the phone’s camera software that caused some images taken in daylight to appear blurry. There are also some fixes for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and messaging.

The software update will only work on Lumia phones in the U.S., but Nokia says it’ll roll out globally soon. If you have a Lumia 920 or 820, you’ll receive a notification when the software is ready to download.

Strong software sales push Oracle shares to 19-month high

Strong software sales push Oracle shares to 19-month high

The company’s results often set the tone for smaller software makers, and analysts said the 17 percent jump in its quarterly software sales boded well for the industry.

Investors pay close attention to new software sales as they generate high-margin, long-term maintenance contracts and are an important gauge of a company’s future profits.

“Oracle delivered strong results in a challenging environment,” Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Derrick Wood said in a note to clients.

Investors are worried that corporations would postpone spending on technology because of uncertainty over the year-end deadline for Congress and U.S. President Barack Obama to reach a compromise on the looming “fiscal cliff”, an automatic rise in tax rates and government spending cuts next year.

Shares of Oracle, which competes with Germany’s SAP AG and Salesforce.com Inc, rose to $34.15 in early Wednesday trading on the Nasdaq.

Oracle said earlier this month it would give over $800 million back to shareholders, joining a rising number of companies accelerating dividend payments or declaring special dividends because of uncertainty surrounding the U.S. government’s fiscal plans.

“(Oracle’s) investments and efforts to build out its product portfolio and sales capacity are clearly starting to pay off handsomely and enable it to navigate the rough seas,” Stifel Nicolaus analyst Brad Reback said.

Reback, who has a “buy” rating on the stock, raised his price target by $1 to $38.

Oracle, which was slow to embrace cloud computing — a broad term referring to the delivery of computer services via the Internet from remote data centers — is now trying to drive growth by promoting its suite of cloud computing products.

Corporate technology buyers like the approach because it is faster to implement and has lower upfront costs than traditional software, which businesses need to install on their own computer systems.

“Calendar 2013 is promising for Oracle thanks to a strong product cycle, market share gains, and healthy secular trends for cloud spend,” FBR Capital Markets analysts said.

The brokerage, which has an “outperform” rating on the company’s stock, raised its price target by $1 to $37.

“The only blemish in the quarter was on the hardware front, as the company remains focused on sunsetting uneconomical product offerings,” FBR said.

The company’s hardware business, which it acquired with its $5.6 billion purchase of Sun Microsystems in January 2010, continued to be sluggish, and quarterly hardware systems product sales fell 23 percent from a year earlier.

Building Body Parts With Software

Good news: Maybe people are not so different from machines after all.

On Tuesday a small company in San Diego called Organovo Holdings, which already makes human tissue on a small scale, announced a partnership with Autodesk to design a bioprinting platform.

The idea is to use some of the Autodesk software now used for the design and manufacture of inanimate objects like light fixtures or kitchen appliances for the construction of living tissue, and, eventually, organs.

If living organs can be made the same way we can now make, say, flower pots and aircraft parts, using three-dimensional printers, the cost of medicine may drop while its capabilities improve.

“Right now we can create a 3-D liver slice by telling a ‘printer’ where to put cells,” said Keith Murphy, the chief executive officer at Organovo. “We can create something less than a millimeter thick, which we put in a dish for drug studies. Longer term, the question is, can we make an entire liver?”

That is a more complex process, which would involve the precise placement of cells to make both the organ material and things like veins and capillaries, while keeping the whole thing alive. That is likely many years away, Mr. Murphy said.

It would also be a far more ambitious task than other efforts at building organs, like the manufacture of an adult trachea using stem cells over a sterile plastic tube as surgeons in Baltimore did.

A nearer-term project involves making liver cell assay plates, so scientists can readily test things like varying drug dosages, and the creation of tissue for surgical trials. In both cases, Organovo will need to produce significant amounts of material from its printers.

Mr. Murphy said working with Autodesk, which has done a lot of work in 3-D printers, will give his company a better understanding of how to make 3-D software, including how Organovo and others can better design 3-D tissues.

Autodesk, in turn, is looking to simulate how nonliving 3-D objects are created so it can improve its core business.

“If you design a car chassis, the design stays the same,” said Carlos Olguin, who runs the Bio/Nano/Programmable Matter Group at Autodesk. “Biological printing involves the self-assembly of things like stem cells. It’s a different design paradigm that could have a big effect on things like massive prototyping.”

“As biology becomes a more mature engineering discipline, we want to have a lot more partners,” he said. Neither company is paying the other, and two teams of about four people each will work together on the project in what Mr. Olguin called “the first phase.”

SmartBear Adds Test Automation for HTML5, Rich Media for Visual Studio 2012, .NET

SmartBear Adds Test Automation for HTML5, Rich Media for Visual Studio 2012, .NET

SmartBear Software’s latest update brings devs continuous testing capabilities for next-gen desktop and web apps running HTML5, ASP.NET and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). TestComplete 9.1 supports Microsoft Visual Studio 2012, Windows 8 and IE 10. IDN speaks with SmartBear’s Goran Begic.

SmartBear Software’s latest update brings devs continuous testing capabilities for next-gen desktop and web apps running HTML5, ASP.NET and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). TestComplete 9.1 supports Microsoft Visual Studio 2012, Windows 8 and IE 10.

“Modern web applications must function on multiple browsers and operating systems so dev teams need testing tools that offer tight integration with the .NET platform to make them more productive,” SmartBear’s senior product marketing manager Goran Begic, told IDN.

TestComplete 9.1 aligns its continuous testing and integration feature with advancements in the latest edition of the Microsoft Visual Studio platform. It lets devs automate functional testing of HTML5 web content similarly to how they test a Windows desktop or web applications, Begic added.

Begic listed these key benefits to the TestComplete 9.1 update:

Integration with the “build” process in Visual Studio. “TestComplete tests are integrated in Visual Studio test projects, and all Visual Studio integration capabilities are usually a couple of clicks away. There is no need for custom interfaces and integration points to be built and maintained,” Begic said.

Faster testing, troubleshooting. “Team Foundation Server (TFS) integration, together with project level integration reduces the time required for fixing of defects, which is typically the biggest time sink in a project,” Begic said. Failed tests can be associated with defects and work items in TFS. This lets devs access tests from within their environments without having to worry about the correct setup. This easy access ensures correct reproduction of scenarios that lead to unexpected behavior, he added.

Automation. Devs can automate filling out forms that use new Input types or conduct searches (of numbers, email, semantic elements) and verify the data.

Extended testing capabilities. Adds keyword testing framework, recording capabilities (based on object recognition), object recognition technology and broad support for third party libraries (including ComponentOne, Developer Express, Infragistics etc.).

Inside SmartBear’s Support for
Rich Media, HTML Desktop Devs

“We see a need for testing rich media content, scripts and logic, as well as style. This is multiplied by the number of platforms on which web applications need to be tested. That was really the motivation behind the development of cross-browser testing capabilities, where tests can be created in one browser and run on any other supported browser,” Begic said.

HTML5 testing is a clear and growing demand among devs, Begic added.

“We see a clear trend toward adoption of HTML5/JavaScript/CSS3 as a platform of choice for new projects. Web applications are required to run on different browsers, operating systems and hardware platforms, including mobile,” Begic told IDN. The recent HTML5 support joins existing support for Ajax, Java, ASP.NET, Silverlight and Flash/Flex. “As new web technologies gain adoption in the marketplace, we will support them as well,” Begic said.

That said, SmartBear’s support for HTML5 web applications does not currently extend to mobile apps, Begic added. “At the moment we provide support for cross-browser testing on the desktop, and we have a roadmap for extension of this support to mobile platforms. Mobile is an integrated part of our web strategy, and it includes both applications running in browsers as well as mobile apps,” Begic said.

He wouldn’t pinpoint when TestComplete will deliver on those mobile capabilities, except to say, “The speed with which we will transform the roadmap into product capabilities will largely depend on the needs of our users.”

Begic also put SmartBear’s desktop-centric focus on HTML5 by sharing some historical context. “BHTML5 technology, while being very relevant for mobile development largely because of platforms such as PhoneGap, was originally aimed at serving desktop primarily. The advantage of HTML5 for the desktop was to provide rich internet experience for users directly through browser implementations,” Begic told IDN.

In recent times, the mobile aspect of HTML5 has come to the forefront “because of lack of standard interoperable RIA options such as Flash or Silverlight across different mobile OSes,” he added. TestComplete 9.1 is available immediately. More than one million developers, testers and operations professionals currently use SmartBear tools.
