Google Earth 6 Brings Integrated Street View And 3D Trees. Yes, Trees. 80 Million Of Them!

There’s an easy way to tell that Google Earth is getting so advanced that it’s getting dangerously close to looking like actual Earth: touted new features are kind of humorous. While version 4 brought the sky, and version 5 brought the oceans, now version 6 is bringing trees. Yes, trees. I fully expect version 7 to highlight the addition of dirt.

Kidding aside, the latest version is obviously the best one yet. And trees are obviously a hugely important part of the Earth. To get them into Google Earth, the search giant has made 3D models of over 50 different species of trees. And they’ve included over 80 million of them in various places around the world including Athens, Berlin, Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, and Tokyo. They’re also working with some conservation organizations to model threatened forests around the world.

Gmail Now Does Phone Calls. Free…

Most of our communication needs seem to be on a flat rate these days and one or two more phone calls on your cell may not matter. However, there is a certain appeal to free phone calls and if you want to call a landline from your PC without having to pay for a soft phone service, you can do that now. Right from your Gmail account.

Google launched this new feature earlier today as a pilot and said that landline calling in the U.S. will remain free until at least the end of the year. Skype currently offers such a service for $7.99 per month. Google offers international calling as well, but charges extra fees – for example. 12 cents per minute to Algeria, 2 cents per minute to Australia or 4 cents per minute to Russia.

Fasten Your Seatbelts – Firefox 4 Beta adds new JavaScript power and faster graphics

A new release of Firefox 4 Beta is now ready for you to download and test! This release boosts performance in some important ways: it adds the JägerMonkey just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compiler; adds more support for hardware-accelerated graphics, as well as hardware acceleration for Windows XP and Mac OS X; and enables 3D capabilities, without the need for plug-ins, with WebGL.

This means pages load faster, interactions with websites are snappier and the Web is just a lot more fun. For developers, this means you can build richer high-performance Web applications and explore the world of 3D graphics, inherent to the Web.

Also, the Add-ons APIs for Firefox 4 are now stable, so if you are an add-on developer, now is the time to update your Firefox 3.6-compatible Add-ons to support Firefox 4.

What’s New:

Boosting JavaScript Performance with JägerMonkey
JägerMonkey is an invisible but powerful addition to Firefox 4 Beta. The Firefox SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine now incorporates the new JägerMonkey JIT compiler, which, along with enhancements to the existing TraceMonkey JIT and SpiderMonkey’s interpreter, add up to speeds that really show off today’s rich Web apps. You’ll notice this in faster start-up time, improved page-load speed and the performance of Web apps and games.

Firefox 4 Beta is really fast. Here’s how the latest beta compares with Firefox 3.6 and previous versions of Firefox 4 Beta on various JavaScript benchmark test suites:

Boosting Graphics Performance
This update to Firefox 4 Beta incorporates hardware-accelerated graphics into the final rendering of a website — referred to as “compositing.” This enables websites to load and respond faster to rich and interactive content like Web games, apps or photos. On Windows (including Windows XP), hardware acceleration is done using DirectX technology; on Mac OS X, it’s done using OpenGL.

French social security now run on PostgreSQL and Red Hat Linux

According to a report from the Open Source Observatory and Repository for European public administrations (OSOR), France’s social security system, the Caisse Nationale d’Allocations Familiales (CNAF), is now using the open source PostgreSQL database management system (DBMS). The IT firm Bull is assisting CNAF and says that the PostgreSQL system is currently running nearly one billion SQL queries each day on Red Hat Linux servers.

Discussing the move, CNAF’s Deputy Director of Information Systems Marc Pavie said, “Our choice of PostgreSQL was not just driven by the fact that this software is open-source,” adding that, “This is a technically rich DBMS, that included all the features we need. It has levels of performance and reliability that meet our production goals”. Pavie goes on to note that it also allows his organisation to save costs on licences for a proprietary DBMS and to reduce its overall license budget. The move to the new systems took a total of 18 months to complete – 168 databases were migrated, representing 4 TB of data.
