Web 3.0

Last couple of years the development of the web has been dubbed as web 2.0, which is about the social media, networking and users contributing to the content. In addition there has been talks over terms such as Enterprise 2.0, in which the business development, intellectual capital and innovation come from community ideology. Or mine Creativity 2.0.

I agree that this is very important in the new age, and definitely networking technologies have propelled opportunities of a community based knowledge further than they have ever been. However, over a year now, I have said that such a huge amount of content in places like YouTube, needs curation and editing. Someone to edit the information to a package that is high quality and to the point.

Now there are indications about the next phase of web development, and its curating. Dubbed as Web 3.0. Here is a quote by Michelle Madhok, published on…

Download a Taste of Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 Ahead of Firefox 3.1 Beta 2

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

With Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 still cooking, Mozilla is offering for download the first taste of Firefox 3.1 Beta 3. Just as Microsoft is working its way up to Internet Explorer 8 Release Candidate, so is Mozilla laboring to produce the first RC Build of its open-source browser. And, when it comes down to Firefox 3.1 codename Shiretoko, a couple of Betas are standing between the browser and the Release Candidate stage, namely Beta 2 and Beta 3.

With baking time on Firefox 3.1 Beta 2 almost over, Beta 3 bits can already be grabbed from Mozilla’s FTP servers. Mike Beltzner, Mozilla User Experience lead, indicated that inserting the Beta 3 milestone before RC was necessary in order to permit features integrated late into Beta 2 to mature to a sufficient level.

“We don’t have full clarity into the nature of our remaining blockers, some of which likely require beta exposure. In order to close this release, a re-triaging (like we did around Firefox 3 Beta 4) is required, both to identify the severity of the remaining blockers and the time required to address them properly. Further, the impact of late Beta 2 landings such as Private Browsing Mode, Worker Threads, Speculative Parsing and TraceMonkey will benefit from multiple beta releases,” Beltzner stated.

A New Photoshop: CS4

Usability and Performance Enhancements in New Photoshop CS4 Edition

It’s time for another improved version of Photoshop, and this new version’s full name is “Adobe Photoshop CS4“.

Photoshop CS4 is part of Adobe’s new Creative Suite 4 product line. This line includes various Adobe creative programs that spread across print, web, mobile, film, and video production. It is also Adobe’s biggest software release to date which encompasses 13 products, 14 integrated technologies, and eight services! Wow, that’s a lot of creativity, but let’s get back to the new Photoshop CS4.

My first thoughts upon hearing about a new Photoshop edition were “What could they possibly do to make it better? It already has everything.” While it seems that way to me, Adobe was able to subtly, but noticeably, improve on their flagship product with several convenience and performance enhancing features.

Photoshop CS4 has many new features, some subtle but appreciated improvements, and, as always, a few frustrations. To me the most important change was how Adobe completely renovated the way adjustment layers work. Instead of being tucked away in dialogue boxes, they are now in an adjustment layer panel. Also, they are easier to reach, much more intuitive, and include an important new adjustment layer called “vibrance”, which provides subtle color enhancement.

Review: Adobe Photoshop CS4 One-on-One

Adobe Photoshop CS4 One-on-One by Deke McClelland is from Deke Press | O’Reilly (2008). This is a full-color book with excellent illustrations for every step of instruction. In addition, there are 4 hours of video lessons from lynda.com with Deke McClelland. Deke McClelland is one of the better known authors about Photoshop for good reason. He’s earned a reputation for being good by, well, being good. Whether you’re an old hand at Photoshop who wants to keep up with the changes for CS4, or you’re a beginning who wants to understand what Photoshop is capable of doing, this book can help you.

There are 12 chapters, or lessons. Here’s a summary (in my terms, not the book’s):

basic software orientation and use
highlights, midtones, shadows
color balance
selections
cropping and straightening
painting and editing
masks
filters
layers
text and shapes
styles
printing and output

Material not covered here, ostensibly because McClelland covers it so thoroughly elsewhere, are actions and Save for Web, among others. Elsewhere is lynda.com. The book gives you a URL for a seven day free trial at lynda.com if you want to check out some of those other resources.
